First 3 steps after the proposal

You’re engaged? Congratulations

But… what do I do now?

If, like many people, you’re stuck on where to start with your wedding planning, we’ve put together a quick start guide to the top 3 tips to get you on your way.

1. MARRIAGE – YES, OR NO?

You’re probably thinking, “why would I be here if I didn’t want to get married?”, and that’s a fair enough question. However, like any big decision in life, we want to make sure that we are all in before we jump.

  • Have an open conversation about whether marriage is important to you or whether being in a loving, committed engagement is enough.
  • Check out our blog article on important conversations to have before marriage to guide you through this first step.

Not all couples choose to get married and that’s totally okay – remember, you can change your mind at any time. There is no right or wrong, despite what our culture tells us.

2. TIMEFRAME

Presuming your answer to the first question is “heck yes”, with timing you’ll need to consider:

  • The bigger picture of your life together and where a wedding fits in (i.e., family planning or career aspirations)
  • Budget constraints and saving goals
  • Your current load and ability to commit to planning (even though we hope to make this part of your life easier!)
  • Ability to take leave, if necessary
  • Seasonal changes
  • If you’re set on a vendor, check their availability
  • Of course, COVID restrictions… sigh.
3. LOCATION

Choosing a destination for your special day is one of the biggest decisions you’ll make, so to assist you in this process, discuss the following with your fiancé:

  • Style of wedding – e.g., beach, city, country
  • Guest list size – or will you elope?
  • Restrictions – not just COVID border closures, but other considerations such as your guests’ ability (or willingness) to travel or the ease of getting there
  • Destinations that have an ideal climate for the style of wedding you want, in the timeframe that you desire
  • Level of privacy desired
  • Costs associated with travel

Based on your requirements, narrow it down to the top 3 possible destinations. Then, start researching venues in these destinations ASAP.
