Getting to know Ceremonies by Georgina

Organised, Dedicated, Personal

What inspired you to become a celebrant?

Ask my hubby and my favourite movies are chick flicks – either where the girl gets the guy of her dreams, where happily ever after happens, or when the hero or heroine saves the day. I have even been known to tear up at TV advertisements! I never considered becoming a celebrant until my hubby suggested it.

While having a conversation about our next step in life, I considered a change of career and perhaps starting my own business. Many different careers were put on the table – bookkeeper, real estate agent, something to do with health and fitness – none however seemed quite right. Hubby threw out, “what about a celebrant?” It was completely random. “What? Why?” I asked. And it dawned on me.

As my extended family’s designated public speaker, and the fact that I can often be found at night watching sappy movies on TV, it just seemed like a logical idea. So I pondered, I researched and I pondered and researched some more. Yes! This is for me.

I love LOVE – love that is shown between two people starting their journey together, love shown between two people who have been together forever who are reaffirming their commitment, and love for the special people or pets in our lives that we want to say goodbye to. Your wedding day is just the start of your Happily Ever After!

What is your favourite moment during a couple’s ceremony and why?

So many to choose from!

  • I love watching the groom’s reaction when he sees his beautiful bride for the first time.
  • The moment after the couple have both recited their vows and they take a breath and realise that they just got married!

What wedding moment has given you the biggest “feels” so far?

I was lucky enough to be asked to marry two of my best friends. It is always an honour to be invited into a couple’s happily ever after journey because it’s such an intimate moment. However, to be asked to declare my two best friends as husband and wife is something I will never forget!

Most of my couples want a simple but personal ceremony. They don’t really want a full ceremony with readings and rituals. They just want something short and sweet, but beautiful and intimate.

Georgina’s top tips for ceremony planning includes…

  • Don’t sweat the small stuff. Stuff will go wrong, so be flexible. Your wedding day professionals will do everything to make sure your day is stress-free for you. The main goal for the day is that you and your partner are legally married!
  • There are no rules to choosing music for your ceremony. Just choose music that is meaningful to you.
  • When it comes to writing vows, start out by making your partner feel like a million dollars. Compliment them, encourage them, affirm them. Let them know you’re here for them and them only.
  • The next step is making a promise (a vow) – perhaps even many promises or vows. This is the “why” behind the “let’s get married”.
  • To finish your vows, wrap it all up with a quick look to the future and create a path forward for the both of you. To help, all my couples are given a vow writing guide to help them put their emotions and feelings onto paper.

It was a pleasure reading Georgina’s story and the super helpful advice she has offered our couples. Thank you, Georgina!
